When time outweighs cost, the airplane is the transport mode of choice for intercontinental cargo. Fixed-wing aircraft generate aerodynamic lift and are powered by jet turbines or propellers. Air freight moves either in dedicated freighters such as the Boeing 747F or 777F, or as belly cargo in the lower holds of passenger aircraft – a segment that accounts for a significant share of total air cargo capacity. The cost premium over sea or road freight is substantial, confining air transport to high-value goods, pharmaceuticals, perishables, urgent spare parts, and express parcels. The airplane itself is the physical asset; the air waybill (AWB) is the accompanying contract of carriage.
