Unlike aviation safety, which covers technical airworthiness and accident prevention, airline security addresses deliberate unlawful interference: hijacking, explosives, sabotage, and smuggling. The principal international framework is ICAO Annex 17; within the EU, Regulation (EC) No 300/2008 establishes a common set of rules for civil aviation security. Airlines, airport operators, and authorities implement screening of passengers and baggage, cargo inspection, reinforced cockpit doors, and personnel background checks. For freight forwarders, the practical implication is clear: shipments must be declared secure or handled by a recognised Regulated Agent before being loaded onto an aircraft. Undeclared dangerous goods or missing security documentation routinely result in cargo being refused or seized.
