Before an air cargo pallet is loaded onto an aircraft, it passes through at least one security control – often several, distributed across different points in the supply chain. Air cargo security control is the mandatory inspection of freight shipments for prohibited, dangerous, or security-relevant contents. Methods include X-ray screening, computed tomography, explosive detection dogs, and verification of documents and cargo origin. Typical control points are the regulated agent's acceptance facility, the handover to the airline, and the destination airport. This should not be confused with customs inspection: security control targets threat prevention, whereas customs examines the tariff and regulatory compliance of the shipment – both may apply to the same consignment but serve distinct purposes.
