> Unlike the airline that operates the aircraft, an air cargo agent is an independent intermediary acting as the operational link between shipper and carrier.

Unlike the airline that operates the aircraft, an air cargo agent is an independent intermediary acting as the operational link between shipper and carrier. The agent manages the full process: cargo acceptance, IATA-compliant packaging advice, preparation of the air waybill (AWB) and hazmat documentation, customs filing, capacity booking with the airline, and tracking and delivery coordination at destination. Many air cargo agents hold IATA accreditation as approved cargo agents, which entitles them to issue AWBs on behalf of airlines. Remuneration typically consists of carrier commissions and handling fees charged to the shipper. Compared with a general freight forwarder covering all transport modes, the air cargo agent specialises exclusively in air freight and maintains direct capacity relationships with airlines.
