Air and sea freight consolidation enters the shipping process when individual cargo volumes fall short of filling a container or justifying dedicated aircraft capacity. A freight forwarder or consolidation house combines shipments from multiple shippers into a single loading unit: in sea freight, a shared full container (FCL) billed at LCL rates to each shipper; in air freight, multiple house air waybills grouped under one master air waybill issued by the consolidator. Shippers gain access to lower per-unit freight rates; carriers benefit from improved load factors. At destination, the consolidation house deconsolidates the shipment and arranges onward delivery to each consignee. This differs from a straightforward LCL booking: consolidation is an active bundling service performed by an intermediary, not simply a booking category offered by the carrier.
