The Advanced Shipping Notice (ASN) process gives the consignee a structured, data-rich alert about an incoming delivery before the goods arrive. The notice carries item numbers, quantities, packaging units, dispatch date, and estimated delivery date – everything needed to pre-allocate warehouse space and staff. Unlike a simple dispatch confirmation, an ASN provides pack-level detail down to pallet or carton, making it indispensable for automated goods-receipt systems. Transmission relies on EDI message types such as DESADV (UN/EDIFACT) or the 856 transaction set (ANSI X12). In high-volume supply chains, a well-executed ASN cuts unloading and booking time considerably and lowers the risk of receiving errors.
