The Advanced Shipment Notification (ASN) gives the receiving party advance visibility of an incoming shipment before goods physically arrive. Sent electronically by the supplier, it typically covers item numbers, quantities, packaging units, weights, and carrier details – enabling warehouse teams to pre-allocate dock space, schedule inbound labour, and identify discrepancies against the purchase order before unloading begins. In EDI workflows, the ASN maps to the DESADV message type. It is distinct from the delivery note and the commercial invoice: the ASN carries no payment obligation and does not transfer title.
