In EDI environments the ASN travels as an X12 856 or EDIFACT DESADV transaction. Warehouse managers use it to pre-allocate dock slots, brief receiving teams, and flag any discrepancy against the original purchase order before unloading begins – cutting dwell times and reducing the manual reconciliation work that follows every delivery. Many large retailers and manufacturers make ASN submission mandatory; failure to comply can trigger chargebacks or supplier scorecards penalties.
