An Advance Shipping Notice (ASN) is a structured pre-arrival notification sent by a supplier to the consignee before a shipment is delivered. It typically includes item numbers, quantities, weight, packaging configuration, and expected arrival date. As a standardised EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) message type, the ASN allows the receiving party to pre-plan goods receipt, allocate warehouse resources, and identify discrepancies against the purchase order before the goods physically arrive. Not to be confused with a delivery order: the ASN informs about an upcoming shipment but does not constitute a transport instruction.
