A truck hasn't left the loading dock yet when the supplier already transmits an Advance Shipping Notice (ASN) electronically to the consignee. The ASN carries item-level detail: SKUs, quantities, packaging hierarchy, batch or serial numbers, and an estimated arrival window. Armed with this data, receiving warehouses can pre-assign storage locations, streamline goods receipt, and identify discrepancies against purchase orders before the delivery arrives. In retail and manufacturing supply chains, ASN integration with Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) is often a contractual supplier requirement. Unlike a packing list, which travels physically with the shipment, the ASN precedes it.
