The ADN – European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Inland Waterways – is an international treaty administered by the UNECE that governs hazardous goods transport on Europe's inland waterway network, including the Rhine, Danube, and the Dutch canal system. It sets out the rules for classification, packaging, labelling, documentation, and emergency response that forwarders, barge operators, and shippers must observe. The ADN is regularly revised and is deliberately harmonised with ADR (road) and RID (rail), forming a coherent trimodal dangerous goods framework for land transport in Europe. It should not be confused with the IMDG Code, which applies exclusively to maritime shipping.
