When a shipment is lost or damaged in transit, the carrier's statutory or contractual liability applies first – but it is regularly capped at fixed amounts per kilogram or freight unit, often well below the actual commercial value of the goods. Add-on transport insurance bridges this gap: the shipper covers the full declared value and is protected against total loss, physical damage, or theft, with some policies also extending to delay-related losses on high-value consignments. The premium is calculated based on declared value, routing, and commodity risk class. This differs from carrier liability insurance, which is limited to the carrier's own fault up to its contractual ceiling.
