Add-on services – also known as value-added services (VAS) – are optional offerings in freight and warehousing that extend beyond the agreed base scope of transportation or storage. Typical examples include packaging, labelling, kitting, assembly, customs clearance, and returns management. Freight forwarders and third-party logistics providers (3PLs) offer them to simplify shipper operations and strengthen their own service portfolio. Charges are quoted separately from the base freight rate and only apply when the service is actively commissioned. Not to be confused with surcharges, which are levied automatically on shipments irrespective of specific shipper instructions.
