Im Aussenhandel exportiert das Land hauptsächlich Fisch und Kokosprodukte, während es stark auf Importe von Konsumgütern, Treibstoff, Lebensmittel und Baumaterialien angewiesen ist. Logistisch verfügen die Atolle über kleine Häfen, begrenzte Luftverkehrsanbindungen und rudimentäre Strasseninfrastruktur, wodurch Transitfunktionen für die Region kaum gegeben sind. Die Landeswährung ist der Australische Dollar (AUD).
