Mayotte (ISO code: YT) is a French overseas department in the Indian Ocean, between Madagascar and the coast of Mozambique. Politically it is a French department and, since 1 January 2014, an EU outermost region. It belongs to the EU customs territory but is excluded from the EU fiscal territory, so VAT does not apply and dock dues (octroi de mer) are levied instead. The climate is tropical maritime with a rainy and cyclone season from November to May. The economy is dominated by the public sector, complemented by fishing, agriculture and retail. Logistically the island depends heavily on imports, supplied mainly through the port of Longoni and Dzaoudzi-Pamandzi airport. The currency is the euro. Cyclone Chido (14 December 2024) caused severe damage, and reconstruction continues to weigh on supply chains in 2026.
