Tonga (ISO code: TO) is a Polynesian kingdom in the South Pacific made up of more than 170 islands, of which around 36 are inhabited, lying east of Fiji and south of Samoa. It is a constitutional monarchy with democratically elected institutions. The climate is tropical-maritime with high temperatures, high humidity and a pronounced rainy season from November to April. The economy rests on agriculture, fisheries, services and tourism, with exports such as fish, squash, root crops and kava, while the country relies heavily on imports of food, fuel, vehicles and consumer goods. Logistically Tonga is served by the port of Nuku'alofa, Fua'amotu International Airport and a road network on the main islands, but it has only limited transit functions for the region.
