Syria lies in Western Asia, bordering Turkey, Iraq, Jordan, Israel and Lebanon, with a Mediterranean coastline. After the fall of the Assad regime in December 2024, the country entered a reconstruction phase under a transitional government led by President Ahmed al-Sharaa. The economy rests on agriculture, oil and gas, industry and services, with infrastructure heavily damaged by years of conflict. Logistically, Syria relies on the seaports of Latakia and Tartus, the airports of Damascus and Aleppo, and road and rail links that are only partly operational. The currency is the Syrian pound (SYP). During 2025 the United States, the EU and Switzerland lifted their comprehensive economic sanctions, opening the way for foreign investment in ports, energy and reconstruction, while targeted sanctions on former regime figures remain in force.

Die umfassenden Wirtschaftssanktionen wurden 2025 aufgehoben (USA per EO 14312 zum 1.7.2025, Caesar Act am 18.12.2025; EU am 28.5.2025; Schweiz/SECO am 20.6.2025). Gezielte Sanktionen gegen Akteure des früheren Assad-Regimes, Menschenrechtsverletzer, Captagon-Netzwerke sowie bestimmte US-Exportkontrollen bestehen fort. Eine Einzelfallprüfung bleibt nötig.

### Welcher Hafen ist für Importe nach Syrien am wichtigsten?

Latakia ist der wichtigste Containerhafen; CMA CGM modernisiert das Terminal (rund 230 Mio. Euro, 30-Jahres-Vertrag, Ziel über 1 Mio. TEU). Tartus wird von DP World betrieben (800 Mio. USD) und dient als Mehrzweckterminal. Baniyas ist der Ölhafen.

### Gibt es in Syrien eine Mehrwertsteuer?

Nein. Mit der Schweiz, der EFTA und der EU besteht kein Freihandels- oder Präferenzabkommen. Syrien ist jedoch Mitglied der Grossen Arabischen Freihandelszone (GAFTA) der Arabischen Liga.
