The Solomon Islands (ISO code: SB) are an island nation in the southwestern Pacific, east of Papua New Guinea and northeast of Australia. Politically it is a parliamentary monarchy within the Commonwealth with the British monarch as head of state. The climate is tropical and humid, with high temperatures, heavy rainfall and a pronounced cyclone season. The economy is heavily primary-sector based, resting mainly on forestry, fisheries and agriculture. Because of the island geography and the large distances within the archipelago, maritime logistics is of central importance. Foreign trade is dominated by exports of timber, fish and agricultural products, while machinery, fuel, food and industrial goods are imported. Import dependence is high, as industrial production capacity is limited. There is hardly any international transit function, but individual ports play a regional supply and transhipment role in the Pacific. The national currency is the Solomon Islands dollar (SBD).
