Haiti (HT) lies in the western part of the Caribbean island of Hispaniola, bordering the Dominican Republic, with coasts on the Atlantic and the Caribbean. It is a semi-presidential republic with historically fragile institutions and recurring security challenges. The climate is tropical, with high temperatures, high humidity and pronounced rainy and dry seasons, and the island is exposed to hurricanes. The economy relies on agriculture, services and limited industry, notably coffee, cocoa, mangoes and apparel. Haiti is highly import-dependent for fuel, food and manufactured goods, while exports generate vital revenue. Strategically located ports such as Port-au-Prince, the private Panamax terminal at Lafito and Cap-Haitien underpin supply and international trade. The currency is the Haitian gourde (HTG). As a CARICOM member, Haiti benefits from preferential access to regional and CARIFORUM-EU markets, but logistics are constrained by infrastructure gaps and a volatile security situation.
