Christmas Island (ISO Code: CX) is located in the eastern Indian Ocean south of Indonesia and geographically belongs to Southeast Asia. Politically, it is an external territory of Australia directly administered by the Australian government. The climate is tropical with high temperatures, high humidity, and a pronounced rainy season. Economically, the island is small in structure, with phosphate mining historically playing a central role and today services and government activities dominating. The economic-logistical significance is regionally limited as the island is off the main shipping routes. In foreign trade, there is hardly any self-activity, which is why supply heavily depends on imports from Australia and the Asia-Pacific region. Import dependency particularly includes food, fuels, consumer goods, and construction materials. There is no pronounced transit function due to limited port and transport capacities. The national currency is the Australian Dollar (AUD).
