# Netherlands Antilles (AN)

**Capital:** Willemstad

**Population:** 225'000
**Area:** 800 km²

The Netherlands Antilles (former ISO code AN) was, until 2010, an autonomous country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands in the southern Caribbean off the coast of Venezuela. The island group comprised Curacao, Bonaire, Sint Maarten (southern part), Sint Eustatius and Saba; the seat of government was Willemstad. On 10 October 2010 the country was dissolved: Curacao (ISO code CW) and Sint Maarten (ISO code SX) became autonomous countries of the Kingdom, while Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba form the Caribbean Netherlands (BES, code BQ) as special municipalities. The ISO code AN was subsequently deleted and is only transitionally reserved until 2060. There is therefore no longer a common customs territory; customs, import taxes and logistics now follow the law of each successor territory. Curacao and Sint Maarten used the Netherlands Antillean guilder (ANG), which was replaced on 31 March 2025 by the Caribbean guilder (XCG), pegged to the US dollar; the BES islands have used the US dollar since 1 January 2011. For questions of transport, customs and trade, the country pages of Curacao (CW), Sint Maarten (SX) and the Caribbean Netherlands (BQ) are authoritative.
