## Description

Soon after Armenia's independence in the early 1990s, rising trade prompted Zvartnots International (EVN) to open a new cargo terminal in 1998, rated for around 100,000 tonnes a year. Sitting 15 km west of Yerevan, it concentrates almost all of the country's air freight, with dedicated handlers managing both general and specialised consignments. Air transport matters disproportionately here because Armenia is landlocked and its borders with Turkey and Azerbaijan are closed, leaving overland routes to run through Georgia's Black Sea ports of Poti and Batumi or south via Iran. High-value exports such as jewellery, cut stones, precision goods and apricots therefore favour the airway. In January 2026 the government extended the concession of operator Corporación América Airports, which plans to invest about US$425 million in passenger and cargo infrastructure. Customs clearance and bonded storage are available on site, while road links tie the airport to Yerevan and the Georgian corridor; the terminal has no direct rail siding.
