## Description

Sharing its runways with the historic Ramenskoye flight test centre some 40 kilometres south-east of Moscow, Zhukovsky International Airport (ZIA/UUBW) is the newest and smallest of the four airports serving the Russian capital. A single four-storey terminal handles both domestic and international services, flown by carriers including Ural Airlines, Red Wings, Rusline and Tajikistan's Somon Air. Its role in air freight remains marginal: despite repeated announcements of a cargo terminal — figures of up to 300,000 tonnes a year have circulated — no dedicated facility is confirmed to be in operation. In practice, freight moves as belly cargo on scheduled passenger flights, with general cargo cut-offs of about 90 minutes before departure on domestic services and 75 minutes on international ones. The unusually long test-centre runways make the site technically suitable for heavy freighters, but runway length alone does not substitute for handling infrastructure, bonded warehousing or customs capacity. Shippers moving air cargo to or from Moscow normally work through Sheremetyevo (SVO), the region's principal freight airport, with Domodedovo (DME) and Vnukovo (VKO) as further options. Since 2022 Russian carriers have been barred from EU airspace and vice versa, so consignments between Europe and Russia are generally routed via third countries such as Türkiye, the UAE or Kazakhstan, and sanctions and export control screening must be completed before booking.
