## Description

Rough diamonds, gold and mineral samples are among the highest-value goods leaving Yellowknife International (YZF) by air, moving south under special handling from Canada's diamond country. As the central airport of the Northwest Territories, YZF supplies remote communities and the Diavik, Ekati and Gahcho Kué mines deep in the tundra. It handled some 29,000 tonnes of cargo as far back as 2014, and a study put the theoretical airlift potential for northern resource projects at up to 200,000 tonnes a year. Perishable food and construction materials fly north, while ore, fuel and equipment reach mine airstrips by charter freighter. Operators such as Buffalo Airways, Air Tindi and Canadian North base turboprop and freight aircraft here. Customs clearance is handled by the Canada Border Services Agency; there is no free-trade zone. On the ground, the Mackenzie Highway and seasonal winter ice roads link the apron to the wider Arctic network, making YZF a decisive reference point for northern mine logistics.
