## Description

Airborne Express built it, DHL bet on it and walked away, Amazon brought it back to life: Wilmington Air Park has lived through every cycle of the US express industry. From 1980 this was Airborne's national hub; DHL acquired it in 2003 and shut the domestic operation in 2008, eliminating around 8,000 jobs in one of Ohio's largest-ever layoffs. Today the field hums again. Air Transport Services Group (ATSG) is headquartered on the property — its units ABX Air and Air Transport International fly freighters, AMES runs a major MRO operation, and Cargo Aircraft Management is the world's largest lessor of Boeing 767 freighters. Amazon Air established a formal sortation hub here in 2019, with a dozen or so daily flights feeding up to 50 outbound truck trailers, which makes ILN one of Ohio's highest-volume cargo airports despite having no scheduled passenger service at all. Two runways serve the operation, the longer at 10,700 feet, with the secondary strip rehabilitated in 2024 to allow simultaneous operations. Interstate 71 puts both Cincinnati and Columbus about an hour away. Few airports illustrate the boom-bust-boom rhythm of express freight this vividly.
