## Description

Few towns are as single-mindedly industrial as Weipa, where the Port of Weipa moves millions of tonnes of bauxite a year for Rio Tinto. Almost all of that tonnage leaves by sea, not by air: the deep-water port and shiploaders, not the airport, handle the export bulk. Weipa Airport concentrates on FIFO and passenger traffic, with QantasLink and Skytrans services to Cairns. It has no scheduled cargo terminal; urgent mining and spare-parts shipments rely on ad-hoc charter operators such as EastAir and Pionair. Regular air freight is consolidated through Cairns, the nearest true cargo gateway about 600 kilometres south. The tight integration of mines, rail, power stations and port makes Weipa one of the most heavily engineered corners of northern Australia.
