## Description

At 5,435 feet in the Papuan highlands, Wamena Airport (WMX) handles roughly 2,000 tonnes of cargo and mail because there is simply no other way in — not a single road links the Baliem Valley to the coast. It is the only highland field able to take narrow-body jets such as the A320 and Boeing 737 as well as the C-130 Hercules, which makes it a genuine freight airport rather than a feeder. Fuel, cement, rice and even vehicles are flown in by carriers including Trigana Air, Wings Air and Susi Air, while Asia Cargo Airlines runs converted freighters on weekly runs to Jayapura. Inbound flows are dominated by construction materials, food and perishables for highland communities. Sentani in Jayapura (DJJ) is the main staging gateway for these supplies. The high freight rates reflect the absence of any road alternative. For forwarders, Wamena is the reference point for any supply chain into Papua's interior.
