## Description

At 45 degrees north on the La Pérouse Strait, with the Russian island of Sakhalin visible on clear days, Wakkanai Airport is the northernmost airfield in Japan. ANA flies to Tokyo-Haneda and to Sapporo's New Chitose, on a 2,000-metre runway frequently tested by snow, fog and stiff winds. The airport has no cargo terminal; sea urchin, Rishiri kombu kelp and other catch from northern Hokkaido travel as belly load or by road. For genuine air cargo capacity, shipments are routed to New Chitose (CTS), Hokkaido's main freight airport, about five hours away by truck, where forwarders consolidate the region's traffic.
