## Description

Food aid, medical supplies and military stores have long defined what moves through Wajir, a field in Kenya's arid north-east near the Somali and Ethiopian borders. Built in 1977–78 by Israeli contractor HZ as a Kenya Air Force base, it still holds two military camps within its perimeter. During the Somali crisis it became a staging point for international relief, including Operation Restore Hope, flying food and medicine to stricken areas. A new asphalt runway laid by US Navy Seabees in 2012 lets heavy freighters operate, and most of the roughly seven to fifteen daily movements are cargo or military rather than passenger flights. That makes Wajir a genuine, if defence-led, cargo field, complementing rather than replacing Jomo Kenyatta International (NBO) for general trade. Customs and handling are tuned to relief consignments and the supply of a remote, underserved region.
