## Description

Just 195 tonnes of cargo against roughly 1.8 million passengers in 2025 tells forwarders what Varna Airport (IATA: VAR, ICAO: LBWN) is: a seasonal holiday field on Bulgaria's northern Black Sea coast, not a freight station. Operated in tandem with Burgas by Fraport Twin Star Airport Management, the two coastal airports grew about ten percent to a combined 3.71 million passengers in 2025; at Varna, 40 airlines served 61 destinations and the one-millionth passenger of the year was counted on 5 August 2025. For summer 2026 Wizz Air is basing a third aircraft here and launching five new routes from mid-June — Barcelona, Athens, Paris Beauvais, Debrecen and Gdansk. There is no dedicated cargo infrastructure or freighter handling; the operator's cargo office processes only smaller consignments to IATA standards. Shipments from the Varna region and Dobruja therefore truck about 450 kilometres to Sofia (SOF) via the A2 Hemus motorway, or feed road corridors to Istanbul (IST) for intercontinental uplift. For bulk and breakbulk the sea is the natural choice: the port of Varna, one of Bulgaria's largest, handles grain, containers and general cargo and offers Black Sea ferry links towards Georgia. The airport lies about 8 kilometres west of the city centre on the E70 European route.
