Concessionaire Norte da Amazônia Airports (NOA) has run Val de Cans/Júlio Cezar Ribeiro International Airport (BEL) since September 2023 under a 30-year contract, expanding annual capacity beyond 5 million passengers. The airport is the principal gateway for Brazil's northern Amazon region, serving the Pará state capital of Belém some 12 km from downtown, near where the Pará River meets the Atlantic. Carriers LATAM, Gol and Azul anchor the route network, linking the city to São Paulo, Brasília and other domestic centres. On the freight side, BEL acts as a regional collection point for Amazonian goods: perishable exports such as açaí, fish and Brazil nuts move largely as belly cargo aboard scheduled passenger flights. Heavier consignments and intercontinental lanes are typically routed through the dedicated cargo bases at Guarulhos (GRU) and Viracopos (VCP) in the south-east. The BR-316 trunk road and the nearby river port give forwarders a multimodal option, with the waterways of the Amazon basin handling much of the onward haul into the interior. Ahead of the COP30 climate summit in November 2025, the terminal and apron underwent a thorough upgrade that lifted handling standards across the board.
