## Description

In Brazil's 'Steel Valley', the Vale do Aço Regional Airport (IPN) — long known as Usiminas Airport after the steelworks that prompted its 1959 opening — anchors regional air links for Ipatinga. Heavy industry surrounds it, yet the airport itself carries passengers, not freight: Azul and Passaredo fly domestic routes, and cargo capacity is minimal. Steel and bulk goods leave the valley by rail and road rather than by air. For air freight, shippers turn to the Belo Horizonte/Confins hub (CNF), about 200 km away. Operated by Infraero, IPN returned to full service in late 2021 after runway repairs.
