## Description

Some 50 kilometres south of the capital, in the Khushig Valley near Sergelen, Chinggis Khaan International Airport handles almost all of Mongolia's international air traffic. It opened in July 2021 with Japanese financing and is run by a Japan-Mongolia joint venture, replacing the cramped Buyant-Ukhaa field inside Ulaanbaatar. Flag carrier MIAT Mongolian Airlines, together with Aero Mongolia and Hunnu Air, links the country to Beijing, Seoul, Tokyo, Istanbul and Frankfurt. A dedicated cargo terminal processes inbound and outbound freight and feeds it directly into road transport. Because Mongolia is landlocked, air freight works alongside the Trans-Mongolian Railway and the trucking corridor to the Chinese seaport of Tianjin rather than competing with them. Typical air exports are high-value goods such as cashmere, while mining equipment and consumer products move inbound. One distinctive trait is that the airport sits on the open steppe at roughly 1,300 metres, well outside the city it serves.
