## Description

Tashkent, Almaty and Bishkek are closer to Ürümqi than China's own east coast – geography that has turned Ürümqi Tianshan International Airport (URC) into the country's main air platform for Central Asian trade. In 2024 the airport handled 235,904 tonnes of cargo and mail, ranking 18th in China, and in 2025 it was rated the world's fastest-growing outbound cargo airport. Twenty-nine international freighter routes link URC with 29 cities in 22 countries; top outbound destinations are Tashkent at around 12,000 tonnes and Tbilisi at 11,000 tonnes per year, followed by Istanbul. Since 2025, CMA CGM Air Cargo has operated A330 freighters on the Ürümqi–Paris–Madrid rotation, adding a European mainline. Cross-border e-commerce toward Central Asia, the Caucasus and Türkiye drives the growth. The Khorgos and Alashankou land border crossings with their China-Europe rail services complete the multimodal picture, while the passenger network connects eastern China with the Central Asian capitals.
