## Description

U-Tapao's importance lies less in what it handles today than in what Thailand intends it to become: the dedicated air-cargo gateway of the Eastern Economic Corridor. Operated by the Royal Thai Navy and located near Rayong and Pattaya, some 140 km southeast of Bangkok, the airport currently runs domestic and charter passenger flights while remaining cargo-capable. In April 2026 the EEC Office issued the Notice to Proceed on a 50-year concession worth roughly 290 billion baht, anchored by an air-cargo and logistics zone designed for over one million tonnes a year, a free-trade-zone cargo village and a 13-billion-baht MRO maintenance centre. Its draw for forwarders is multimodal: a planned high-speed rail link tying Don Mueang, Suvarnabhumi and U-Tapao together, expressway access, and the deep-sea ports of Laem Chabang and Map Ta Phut close by. That combination positions UTP as Thailand's emerging sea–air hub for the eastern seaboard. Verified annual tonnage figures are not yet available while the cargo zone is under construction, so for now the airport is best read as a strategic growth site rather than a high-volume freight node.
