## Description

On paper Haiti's principal gateway, Toussaint Louverture International Airport (PAP) has in practice been governed by the country's security crisis rather than by schedules. Gang gunfire that struck airliners forced the airport — about 10 km northeast of Port-au-Prince and named after the independence leader — to close in November 2024; domestic service with Sunrise Airways resumed only on 12 June 2025. The US Federal Aviation Administration barred American carriers from Haitian airspace through at least September 2025, so scheduled international passenger and cargo flights largely stopped. For a time air cargo meant relief and military lift: from 23 April 2025 the US military flew in more than 500 tonnes of material, including equipment for the Haitian National Police. Commercial freight has meanwhile shifted to Cap-Haïtien airport (CAP) and to the seaports, where these remain reachable. In November 2025 Sunrise Airways again suspended flights after an aircraft was hit while taxiing. PAP stays Haiti's central air link, but its operation tracks the security situation, and forwarders must plan for sudden closures and re-routings.
