## Description

Commercial flights returned to Timbuktu Airport (IATA: TOM) only in 2021, after the town's main air link had lapsed during the 2012 jihadist occupation. Sky Mali now operates roughly twice weekly from Bamako via Sévaré. The historic Saharan trading city has no cargo terminal, so airfreight is limited to belly capacity on these small services. Security remains fragile — the airport was shelled during an attack on the town in June 2025 — and commercial cargo effectively routes through Bamako (BKO). Salt slabs from the Taoudenni mines still reach Timbuktu by truck and camel rather than by air.
