## Description

Tenerife runs two airports with a strict division of labour: Tenerife Norte takes inter-island, mail and freight traffic, while Tenerife Sur Airport (IATA: TFS, ICAO: GCTS) on the dry south coast handles international tourism. The southern field opened in 1978 as Reina Sofía, partly because cloud-prone Los Rodeos — site of the 1977 air disaster — had become a bottleneck. With around 13.7 million passengers in 2024 (up 11.4 percent), Tenerife Sur ranks second among Canary Islands airports; Jet2, Ryanair, easyJet and Condor shape the 24-hour schedule operated by Aena. Commercial airfreight is negligible — just about 775 tonnes passed through the field in 2024 — because the archipelago's cargo infrastructure concentrates on Gran Canaria and Tenerife Norte. Forwarders therefore route shipments via Las Palmas (LPA) or Tenerife Norte (TFN) with road on-carriage; the terminal sits on the TF-1 southern motorway, roughly 60 km southwest of Santa Cruz.
