## Description

Palm oil, cocoa, rubber and chilled seafood from south-eastern Sabah set the rhythm of freight at Tawau, the second-busiest airport in Malaysian Borneo after Kota Kinabalu. Serving the Tawau, Kunak and Semporna districts, the airport channels the output of one of Malaysia's most fertile agricultural belts toward domestic and export markets. In 2019 it handled 3,893 tonnes of cargo alongside 1.8 million passengers, most freight travelling in the belly holds of jets bound for Kuala Lumpur and Kota Kinabalu. During 2021 MASkargo added a twice-weekly converted A330 freighter to Hong Kong, giving local producers a direct line into the South China market. Customs clearance is available on site, while heavy and ocean-going consignments move through Tawau's seaport and the Kota Kinabalu hub. Proximity to the Sipadan diving region adds a steady flow of perishable supplies and express shipments. For forwarders, Tawau is the consolidation point for agricultural air freight across south-eastern Sabah.
