## Description

Air Tanzania and regional carriers make Zanzibar the dominant destination from Tanga Airport (TGT)—about 21 of its two-dozen-odd weekly departures head there, with the rest serving Dar es Salaam and Arusha. Opened in 1942 by sisal-estate settlers to move the fibre that once enriched the coastal town, the airport long ago shifted almost entirely to passengers. Air cargo barely registers: since freight began in 2005, volumes have stayed small, peaking at roughly 45 tonnes in 2009. Planned exports from the Tanga region therefore route through the cargo terminal at Julius Nyerere International (DAR) in Dar es Salaam. The nearby port of Tanga, the planned terminus of the EACOP crude-oil pipeline, carries the coast's goods by sea.
