## Description

DHL, FedEx, Qantas Freight and Toll Group run round-the-clock operations at Sydney Kingsford Smith, Australia's busiest international gateway and its leading air-cargo airport. In 2024 the field at Mascot, eight kilometres south of the city, handled 552,679 tonnes of international air freight plus close to 14,900 tonnes of airmail — roughly 45 percent of the nation's air cargo by value and volume and more than 30 percent of interstate freight. Over 80 percent moves as bellyhold capacity on long-haul carriers such as Cathay Pacific, Emirates SkyCargo, Singapore Airlines Cargo and China Southern, complemented by dedicated freighter and express movements at night. Seven cargo terminals operated by competing handlers process perishable exports — chilled meat, seafood and dairy bound for East Asia — alongside high-value pharmaceutical and electronics imports; Qantas Freight recently upgraded its freighter terminal with new cool and ambient rooms and an automated roller deck. From 27 July 2026, Qantas Freight will also open a 24-hour cargo precinct at the new Western Sydney International Airport, sized for over 850 tonnes a week. Road access runs via the M1/M5 motorways and a short link to the adjacent Port Botany seaport, keeping sea-air transfers tight, while the Airport Line provides rail connectivity. Customs and stringent biosecurity controls are administered by the Australian Border Force and the Department of Agriculture. The master plan targets a near doubling of throughput to about 1.4 million tonnes a year by 2045.
