## Description

DHL, FedEx, Qantas Freight and competing handlers run round-the-clock operations at Sydney Kingsford Smith, which moved 552,679 tonnes of international air freight plus close to 14,900 tonnes of airmail in 2024 — roughly 45 percent of Australia's air cargo and more than 30 percent of interstate freight. Over 80 percent travels as bellyhold capacity on long-haul carriers such as Qantas, Cathay Pacific, Emirates SkyCargo, Singapore Airlines Cargo and China Southern, complemented by dedicated freighter and express movements at night. Seven cargo terminals process perishable exports — chilled meat, seafood and dairy bound for East Asia — alongside high-value pharmaceutical and electronics imports; Qantas Freight recently upgraded its freighter terminal with new cool and ambient rooms and an automated roller deck. Since 26 July 2026 Sydney has had a second freight address: the 24-hour cargo precinct at the new Western Sydney International Airport (WSI) opened for business, and the first Qantas freighter lifted off from it on the evening of 27 July. Qantas Freight operates a 24,000 m² facility there with 14,000 m² of warehousing and bases three aircraft (two A321-200 P2F and one A330); Menzies Aviation, dnata Cargo and Texel Air Australasia have also signed on. The precinct is designed to handle up to 1.8 million tonnes a year in the long run, with the first stage able to accommodate eight wide-body freighters or 16 narrow-bodies at once. Road access at Mascot runs via the M1/M5 motorways and a short link to the adjacent Port Botany seaport, keeping sea-air transfers tight, while the Airport Line provides rail connectivity. Customs and stringent biosecurity controls are administered by the Australian Border Force and the Department of Agriculture.
