## Description

Charles Lindbergh named his aircraft Spirit of St. Louis after the businessmen here who financed it — and the airfield where he once flew the mail grew into today's St. Louis Lambert International, named for Albert Bond Lambert, the Olympic golfer and balloonist who bankrolled the field. Once TWA's home hub until 2001, STL now serves about 15 million passengers a year, with Southwest as the dominant carrier. Cargo runs at roughly 160 million pounds annually, split between UPS, FedEx, Amazon Air and DHL freighters and belly capacity, and 2025 brought around one hundred more freighter departures than the year before. On the airport's north side, Boeing's defense plant assembles the F-15EX Eagle II, F/A-18 Super Hornet and T-7A Red Hawk, making STL one of the few US airports with a fighter-jet production line on the field. Foreign Trade Zone 102, administered by the St. Louis County Port Authority, offers duty deferral, and CBP clears freight on site. Six Class I railroads and the Mississippi barge system make metro St. Louis one of America's densest freight crossroads, with I-70 passing the terminal doorstep. Oversized project cargo has a nearby relief valve in MidAmerica St. Louis (BLV), 25 miles east.
