## Description

Millions of holidaymakers, almost no freight: Sochi (AER/URSS), on Russia's Black Sea coast in the Adler district, is a resort airport that ranks among the country's five busiest by passengers yet barely figures in air cargo. Its weight grew after 2022, when several airports across southern and south-western Russia closed on security grounds and Sochi absorbed much of the regional traffic, becoming the coast's main continuously operating gateway. On the cargo side it stays thin: there are no freighter services and no integrator base, so air freight travels in the holds of passenger aircraft, and even that belly capacity is constrained by the sanctions fallout across Russian aviation. Shippers with meaningful Russia-related volumes consolidate through the Moscow airports, chiefly Sheremetyevo (SVO), while every consignment remains subject to Western export controls and sanctions. The A147 coastal highway and the Black Sea railway link Adler with Sochi and the wider Krasnodar region. For forwarders, AER is a passenger and tourism airport with only a marginal cargo role.
