## Description

A cargo terminal built for 40,000 tonnes a year that actually handles a few thousand tells you most of what you need to know about air freight in North Macedonia: capacity is not the constraint, demand is. Skopje International Airport (IATA: SKP, ICAO: LWSK) moved some 3,585 tonnes in 2023, up 36 percent on 2022, with growth driven by automotive suppliers and electronics manufacturers in the free zones around the capital. Operated since 2010 by Turkey's TAV Airports, the airport at Petrovec, some 17 kilometres east of Skopje, is by far the country's main gateway, while TAV's second site at Ohrid handles mostly holiday charters. Around 3.2 million passengers used Skopje in 2025, close to nine percent more than the year before, across 65 destinations served by 25 airlines, with Wizz Air running a dense diaspora network into Central Europe. Until 2018 the airport bore the name «Alexander the Great»; North Macedonia dropped it under the Prespa Agreement to settle the naming dispute with Greece. Freight planners should note the fundamentals: the country is not an EU member, so every shipment clears customs – the customs office sits inside the cargo centre and works roughly 08:30 to 16:30 on weekdays – and most of its air cargo actually moves by road feeder via Vienna, Budapest, Istanbul or nearby Sofia. The site sits directly on Pan-European Corridor X (E-75) towards Belgrade and Thessaloniki; the Corridor VIII rail link to Bulgaria has been under construction for years.
