## Description

On paper SAI was sized for tens of thousands of tonnes of freight; in practice it is a tourism airport that barely moves cargo. Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport (IATA: SAI) opened in October 2023 as the air gateway to the UNESCO-listed temples of Angkor, deliberately built some 40 km east of the city in Sotr Nikom district to shield the monuments from vibration and overflights. In 2024 it handled more than 1.7 million passengers, mostly on routes to China and neighbouring countries, under Chinese operator Angkor International Airport Investment. Freight, however, stays marginal: only about 108 tonnes of cargo and mail had been processed by the end of 2024, essentially belly volumes on passenger flights. For genuine air-cargo shipments out of Cambodia, the route still runs through the Phnom Penh metro gateway (now Techo/KTI), where integrators, customs and bonded warehouses are concentrated. National Road 6 and a new airport access road link the site, but for forwarders SAI is a passenger and tourism reference point, not a cargo station.
