## Description

On paper SAI has a cargo zone rated for 10,000 tonnes a year; in practice it moves almost nothing. Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport (SAI/VDSA) opened in October 2023 as the air gateway to the UNESCO-listed temples of Angkor and carried 1.47 million passengers in 2025, up 5.3 percent, with 714,133 in the first half of 2026 alone. It was deliberately built about 40 km east of the city in Sotr Nikom district to shield the monuments from vibration and overflights, and is operated by China's Angkor International Airport Investment. Scheduled routes lead mainly to China and neighbouring countries. Freight has stayed marginal: only around 108 tonnes of cargo and mail had been processed by the end of 2024, essentially belly volumes on passenger flights. For genuine air-cargo shipments out of Cambodia the route still runs through the Phnom Penh gateway (Techo/KTI), where integrators, customs and bonded warehouses are concentrated. National Road 6 and a new access road serve the site, and onward distribution across the country is entirely by truck. The design capacity - 7 million passengers and 65,800 movements a year, rising toward 12 million by 2040 - makes the priority clear, and for shippers and forwarders SAI remains a passenger reference point with limited freight relevance.
