## Description

On the northern rim of the Kumtag Desert, Shanshan Airport (IATA: SXJ, ICAO: ZWSS), also known as Piqan Airport, serves Shanshan County in Xinjiang's Turpan Basin at 449 m elevation with a 2,500 m concrete runway. Scheduled passenger service is currently minimal to non-existent, and the field has no cargo terminal. Air freight for the county routes through Ürümqi Tianshan International (URC), Xinjiang's main cargo airport about 280 km to the west. Ground transport is the real asset here: the Lanzhou–Xinjiang railway and the G30 expressway both pass through Shanshan on the China–Central Asia–Europe land corridor.
