Set deep in the Kazakh steppe of Aktobe Region, Shalkar is better known as a railway town on the Orenburg–Tashkent mainline than as an aviation point. Its airfield handles mostly regional, charter and supply flights serving a sparsely populated area, without a dedicated cargo terminal or bonded warehouse. Freight forwarders moving goods to or from Shalkar rely on rail or trucking to the nearest cargo-capable airport, Aktobe (AKX), some 400 km to the north.
