## Description

Regional airports rarely make freight headlines, and Sendai (IATA: SDJ) is no exception — its cargo throughput amounts to only a few thousand tonnes a year. Still, the airport is the main air gateway of the Tohoku region in north-eastern Honshu, and its story is remarkable: completely flooded by the March 2011 tsunami, it reopened to flights within weeks and in 2016 became the first privatised airport in Japan. Freight moves chiefly as belly cargo on ANA and JAL domestic services, plus a handful of international routes to East Asia. For substantial import and export volumes, forwarders typically truck consignments to Narita or Haneda. Ground links are convenient: the Sendai Airport Access Line reaches Sendai's main station in 25 minutes, and the seaport of Sendai-Shiogama, the region's largest, lies about 15 kilometres away.
