## Description

The code PLX belongs to Semey – long known under its former name Semipalatinsk – and the airport behind it is the oldest international gateway in Kazakhstan, opened back in 1929 on the Irtysh ten kilometres south-west of the city. Low-cost carrier FlyArystan dominates today's schedule, linking Semey with Almaty, Astana and Shymkent on mainly domestic routes. Upgraded handling and expanded apron space have lifted capacity, but there is no documented dedicated freighter operation. Air cargo therefore moves as belly freight on passenger services, while customs-cleared and plannable volumes are consolidated through Almaty and the developing Sary-Arka cargo base at Karaganda. For eastern Kazakhstan, Semey remains an important reference point on the passenger side rather than a freight hub.
