## Description

Kazakhstan's centre of gravity for air cargo is shifting inland, and Sary-Arka in Karaganda is the clearest expression of that shift. Located 24 km south-east of the city at the geographic centre of the country and run by the private operator JSC Sary-Arka, the airport is the subject of a master plan that aims to lift annual throughput from roughly 15,000 to 200,000 tonnes. Around US$270 million underpins the transformation: some US$70 million for the runway, warehouses, a new fuel complex and handling equipment, and about US$200 million to launch a new Karaganda-based Kazakh cargo carrier. A 350-hectare special economic and free-trade zone is being laid out around the airport, including a bonded warehouse where transit freight can be processed without full customs clearance. A planned rail link to the national network would tie air and rail freight into a single multimodal platform. With China, Russia and Europe all within reach, Sary-Arka is positioned as a natural bridge on the trans-Eurasian corridor – and, for forwarders, the first genuine inland cargo base beyond Almaty and Astana.
